Born on a nursing ward
As a paediatric intensive care nurse, our co-founder Antonia often came home with sore, cracked and bleeding hands from the constant hand washing needed to keep her young patients safe. In 2009 it became so bad she was unable to work for several weeks.
So with her husband Jonny, she spent seven years developing a hand cream gentle enough for a busy shift. Rather than simply sell it to nurses, they decided to sell it to everyone and give it free to nurses.
A member of healthcare staff washes their hands, on average, 50-60 times a day. It's completely unavoidable, the only way to protect both their patients and themselves, but it breaks the skin down, and all too often leaves them unable to work.
We've spent years developing products that really work, award-winning skincare built for hands working in the harshest conditions. In 2019 we asked ourselves how we could also serve the community we set out to help in the first place. That's when the Nursem Promise was born: for every product sold, we give a month's worth of free hand care to a healthcare professional, a nurse, midwife, doctor or physiotherapist.

We bulk deliver a Promise drop to a hospital ward.
Every Promise Pack holds four large bottles of hand cream, six times the size of our standard tube.
That’s enough to be shared across a ward of up to 40 nurses, so the whole team feels it, not just one person.

We distribute the Nursem Promise mainly through partnerships with NHS trusts across the UK, helping us reach staff members with the most acute need. In an ideal world, we would love to support everyone through our Promise, and we truly value the incredible work done by individuals across all sectors. However, as a small business, we must currently limit our send-outs to registered healthcare workers. As of May 2024, we're proud to share that we've delivered 638,087 Nursem Promises. This milestone reflects the continued support of our customers and partners, and the dedication of our team in ensuring every Promise reaches the nurses, midwives, and healthcare workers who need it most. With each product sold, we remain committed to our founding mission.
We're proud to announce that since our launch on 1st March 2019 to end of June 2023, we're on track to send a total of 621,092 Nursem Promises. This includes the 40,000 Nursem Promises we are delivering to hospitals in Newcastle and Birmingham to celebrate the NHS's 75th Birthday on 5th July.
